This detail-oriented cast of the French late 19th century equestrian statue represents a horse in nature with a natural wooden fence entitled “Djinn, Cheval à la Barrière” (Djinn, the Horse by the fence) by the well-known French sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879). Signed (on base) for “P.J. MENE”.

Mêne’s specialty were animal sculptures, of which he mainly produced domestic animals including horses, cows, bulls, sheep and goats. These animal sculptures were in taste and high-demand during the Second Empire.

Mêne created this particular version as a plaster model in 1846 and modelled a bronze version of it in his own workshop that same year. He exhibited it for the first time at the Paris Salon of 1849. Djinn was the name of the horse, which Mêne modelled the piece after, therefore he named the statue “Djinn, Cheval à la Barrière”. It became one of Mêne’s most sought-after casts.

His work was first publicly shown in London in an exhibition on July 8th, 1849.
